Google about to transcribe and index videos
Yesterday on Make Use Of, I had an article published about a beta feature on YouTube where you can have text overlaid on your videos and you can also embed text URL links. Well this seems to be the general direction in which Google seems to be going now with regards to video. Their latest project now is to transcribe videos into text using voice recognition software and then to index that text into their search engine making it searchable.
Do you want to know what Barack Obama said yesterday in a speech? Or what John McCain said a few days ago to journalists? Well if you are not inclined to hunt for the videoclip then you can search on Google for the transcription which will then link to the videoclip itself.
Right now, it’s only confined to the 2008 presidential election news but from what I have heard, this will probably be rolled out to wider international news sources in the long term if the experiment proves to be successful. If you want to try it out, you can install the iGoogle gadget and give it a go but I’ve found it to be a bit hit and miss. It clearly needs a lot of work done to it.
