Twitscoop is one useless app

I’ve been taking a look at Twitscoop which is a bit like Google Trends but this one is for Twitter.    It scans and analyses all the Twitter conversations going on in real time and highlights the words that are mentioned the most.  In theory, it’s supposed to show you “what’s hot on Twitter right now”.

twitscoopscreenshot Twitscoop is one useless appNote the words “in theory” because it doesn’t really do what it advertises.   All the algorithm does is pick up on often used words without giving any regard to its overall context.    So for example, if 100 people say in their Tweets “I’m eating my dinner” or “what will I have for dinner?” or “I don’t feel like dinner tonight” suddenly the word “dinner” becomes “hot” and Twitscoop goes wild.    But those 100 people have discussed dinner in various contexts, making the Twitscoop rather useless overall.

Or to use another example, Twitscoop is picking up people’s names such as Lynn and Jason because those names are being mentioned often.   Again, what use is that to anyone?    It simply picks up that those names are being mentioned quite a lot and suddenly it decides that they are “hot”.    Someone tell me what I am supposed to do with that information?

Whenever a successful service such as Twitter starts, lots of clone sites spring up around it to ride piggy-back in the hope of claiming some of the cream.    But most of these clones are pretty much crap and can be safely ignored.    I can advise you to safely add Twitscoop to the pile.
